The Hollywood sign was created in 1923 as an advertising project. It was left there, and slowly started building status of an important landmark.
It has suffered several acts of vandalism as well as being part of different pranks; however, as it stands today, it is protected by a non profit organization – Hollywood Sign Trust. At the same time, if there is a man who should associated with saving the Sign then it undoubtedly is Hugh Hefner, who participated saving the sign in 1978 as well as now in 2010 donating 900,000$ for purchasing the surrounding land to not allow the real estate development projects just next to the important Sign.
