History – Hollywood Star

One of the world’s most famous landmarks – the words “Hollywood” over Los Angeles – will experience a “cosmetic surgery”.Huge letters to the world the impressive symbol of the Hollywood movie insutry, will be restored and cleaned. They will be coated with a new coat of paint for the first time in the last ten years. The white letters, which are 13.7 meters high and nearly 11 meters wide, require a thorough cleaning.

But let’s look how the Sign has come so far.

Hollywood sign in 1923 was installed by the newspaper Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler. Chandler hired contractor George Roche to build the world’s largest sign. The letters of the sign spelled “HOLLYWOODLAND.” The sign was built with  telephone poles and barn roofing at a cost of $21,000.00, borrowed from prestiti personali. Holes were punched through the sign to help relieve stress caused by wind. Although it was intended to last for only two years, the sign survived to become a beloved part of American history.

Originally it was a magnificent advertisement for new homes – new luxury real esate project – it had an inscription “Hollywoodland”.

It was intended that the letters will be present for only 18 months, but local officials decided to remove the Sign’s last four letters of the inscription and save the rest of it.

In 1973 the inscription was declared a cultural heritage – special status which has helped to protect it until the present day.

A Try to Copy the Sign

Film director Peter Jackson in his new study in the New Zealand city of Wellington is planning to deploy a Wellywood mark, which is a reference to the famous inscription Hollywood. His plan is something that legitimately could be quite difficult.

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which owns the Hollywood Sign in the Los Angelos, promises to prosecute P. Jackson if it is deployed in its hometown’s version of the Hollywood sign. Chamber’s president Leron Gabler notes to the Telegraph newspaper that the inscription is a protected trademark. “We have no objection of them placing their mark, but only if they do not copy ours.”

P. Jackson, who as the author of the Lord of the Rings movie has won an Oscar award, says that it is intended to reproduce exactly the original Sign as how it appeared in 1923. “Big words Wellywood would be  relating to Hollywood, but not in a  satire way, even if the inscription would look completely different,” said Mr Jackson.
